The mission of the MedStar Institute for Innovation is to catalyze and create innovation that advances health.

We are building a house of healthcare innovation, room by room.

MI2 will catalyze a resonant innovation energy that leads to fresh approaches to difficult problems, support the development of tangible innovation in the healthcare domain, and create actual innovative solutions in the specific domains of learning, simulation, information, human factors engineering, and building science.

Like most innovation centers devoted to healthcare, the MedStar Institute for Innovation (MI2) will be about technology— the development of new devices, tools, and software designed to address the thorny issues in healthcare.

But that’s not all.

Like other innovation centers devoted to healthcare, MI2 will also be about new models and systems of care delivery, because it is from this domain that truly transformational change in healthcare will happen.

But that’s not all.

MI2 will also be about thinking— about thinking differently and thinking about different things.

This puts MI2 in some very heady company:

IBM’s core imperative, coming straight from Thomas J Watson, was “Think”

Apple’s charge, in its earlier years, was “Think Different”

MI2’s is “Think Differently.”

You are known by the company you keep.

How will MI2 approach thinking differently?

By using example, analogy, image, metaphor and story, the MI2 website will try to help us see freshly, reframe the landscape, and utilize intersectional and lateral thinking to find new solutions to difficult and thorny problems.
